With a new school year under way, we are excited to feature the winners of our 2016 Outstanding Teaching Awards. Humanities Texas recently presented awards to four teachers during ceremonies at their respective schools. We are pleased to introduce State Fair, a traveling exhibition created by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin. The exhibition, which features thirty-six black-and-white photographs, is a visual distillation of photojournalist Arthur Grace's odyssey through fairs in ten states—California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia. In 1910, Minnie Fisher Cunningham became president of the Galveston Equal Suffrage Association and was soon leading the cause statewide. Her efforts helped Texas women win the right to vote in state primary elections in 1918. American women achieved full suffrage in 1920 with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. But, for Cunningham, the right to vote was only a first step. She went on to help found the National League of Women Voters, and, in 1928, was the first Texas woman to run for the United States Senate. More»
