On March 6, Humanities Texas will host a Dallas screening of the documentary film Shaking It Up: The Life and Times of Liz Carpenter in partnership with The Sixth Floor Museum, KERA, and the SMU Center for Presidential History. A conversation with coproducer/codirector Christy Carpenter and Elizabeth Rees, postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Presidential History, will follow the screening.
Over her eighty-nine years, Liz Carpenter was often front and center where history was unfolding, leaving her own indelible mark on some of the most vivid moments and movements that shaped the twentieth century. Journalist, vice-presidential advisor, White House official, author, humorist, political activist, and feminist leader—hers is the story of blazing professional trails while advocating for women’s rights, political engagement, and the environment. Shaking It Up tells Carpenter's story using archival film and still images, interviews from those who knew her, journalists who covered the history as it was made, and scholars of twentieth-century U.S. history.
The film’s television premiere will follow on Texas public television stations on Tuesday, March 18, at 8:00 p.m.
