George Washington and the Making of America: The Revolutionary War and First Presidency (Fall 2024 Webinars)

On October 2 and 9, 2024, Humanities Texas will hold a two webinars for social studies teachers on George Washington.

Curriculum and Faculty

The webinars will take place on Zoom from 5:00–6:15 p.m. CT on Wednesday, October 2 and October 9. Teachers who register will receive information for both webinars. Attendance for both sessions is encouraged but not required.

  • October 2: Republican General: George Washington and the American Revolutionary War—It is often said, correctly, that George Washington lost more battles than he won in the American Revolutionary War. This session will explore why Washington's republican principles mattered even more than his battlefield victories for securing America's independence and representative government.
  • October 9: George Washington: Inventor of the Presidency—George Washington was not simply the first president but the person who most shaped the office. This session will trace Washington's efforts from the Philadelphia Convention through his two presidential administrations to create the presidency as we know it today.

Content will align with the TEKS for U.S. history and government. Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the webinar series will be content-based and teacher-centered, with an emphasis on teaching with primary sources and developing effective pedagogical strategies.

Denver Brunsman of George Washington University will lead the webinars.
