Teaching Evidence-Based Reading Practices at the Secondary Level (2024 In-Person Workshop)


On June 20-21, 2024, in partnership with the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk, Humanities Texas held a two-day workshop in Houston for social studies and English language arts (ELA) teachers on teaching reading at the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade levels.

Curriculum

Sessions included interactive presentations on research-based approaches to teaching reading and content-area literacy with an emphasis on social studies texts. Faculty presentations focused on developing students’ word study, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

Program faculty included Diane Haager (California State University, Los Angeles) and Jennifer Schnakenberg (The University of Texas at Austin).
