Henry Allen Bullock moved to Texas in 1930 for an academic career spent largely at Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern University. In 1967, he published a history of African American education in the South that earned the Bancroft Prize, one of the highest honors in the field of American history. During his long career, Bullock served on the Texas advisory committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, testified for the inclusion of African American history in Texas history textbooks, and became the first African American to be appointed to the faculty of arts and sciences at The University of Texas at Austin.
