Education
In the summer of 2023, Humanities Texas held a webinar for English language arts (ELA) teachers on strategies for teaching film at the secondary level.
The webinar provided multiple approaches for generating student interest in and understanding of fiction and documentary films into lessons across a range of middle and high school courses. The program featured TEKS-centered content and focused on the basics of teaching film literacy. Using a range of film clips, the webinar covered the various strategies involved in "reading" a film. Teachers were also introduced to specific assignments that encourage individual and group classroom activity and develop students' critical thinking skills.
Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the webinar emphasized close interaction with scholars, the examination of texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities.
The program was led by author and film historian Alison Macor.
The webinar took place over Zoom on July 24. The schedule is available here.
The webinar was made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
