Teaching Evidence-Based Reading Practices at the Secondary Level

On June 28–30, 2022, Humanities Texas held an online institute on teaching reading at the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade levels for both social studies and English language arts (ELA) teachers in partnership with the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at The University of Texas at Austin. 

Curriculum

Content was aligned with the TEKS. Sessions included interactive presentations on research-based approaches to teaching reading and content-area literacy with an emphasis on social studies texts. Faculty presentations focused on developing students’ word study, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the institute was teacher-centered, with an emphasis on developing effective pedagogical strategies and activities.

The program faculty included Diane Haager (Cal State LA) and Jennifer Schnakenberg (The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at The University of Texas at Austin).
