Teaching Media Literacy (Fall 2021 Webinars)

In the fall of 2021, Humanities Texas held five webinars for social studies and English Language Arts teachers on teaching media literacy. 

Curriculum

The webinars aligned with the TEKS. Each webinar in the series provided resources and strategies to help middle and high school students become informed citizens and critical consumers of news in multiple media. Topics included young adolescents' perspectives on journalism; "fake news" in U.S. history; teaching students to become expert readers of the news; video and visual media; and teaching strategies, assignments, and classroom activities. 

Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the webinars were content-based and teacher-centered, with an emphasis on developing effective pedagogical strategies.

Faculty

The program faculty included Gwynne Ash (Texas State University), Megan Fromm (University of Maryland), Susanna Lee (North Carolina State University), Meghan Manfra (North Carolina State University), and Kirsten Ostherr (Rice University).
