The conflicts among Civil War-era political parties in the North intensified in the presidential election of 1864. The Peace Democrats nominated Lincoln’s former general-in-chief, George McClellan, for president, while some Radical Republicans created a new political party named the Radical Democracy and nominated General John Frémont. The Radical Democracy party demanded a constitutional amendment ending slavery, protection of constitutional rights, and an aggressive continuation of the war. Lincoln ran, and won, on a Republican platform.
