Best Practices in Reading Instruction (2020-2021 Online Series)

In the fall of 2020 and spring of 2021, Humanities Texas held a series of webinars on teaching reading at the fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade levels in partnership with the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at The University of Texas at Austin.

Curriculum

Aligned with the Reading and Comprehension TEKS, this cumulative series presented evidence-based approaches to teaching reading across content areas in upper elementary and early middle school. Sessions included interactive presentations on word study and recognition, vocabulary, and reading comprehension with an emphasis on social studies texts. Faculty focused on serving struggling readers, English language learners, and students facing instructional disruptions due to the pandemic. Faculty also provided and modeled strategies for teaching in an online environment.

The webinar series featured presentations by educational consultant María Elena Argüelles; Diane Haager (California State University, Los Angeles); and Jennifer Schnakenberg (The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at The University of Texas at Austin).
