This political cartoon by popular satirist Clifford Berryman portrays President Theodore Roosevelt in an all-American "baseball player" image. In the picture, the progressive Roosevelt finds himself under pressure with a number of baseballs aimed at him at once, each labeled with a piece of legislation introduced to address corruption and monopolization in the railroad industry. Roosevelt, a progressive Republican who supported some regulations on large businesses to protect consumers, charted a middle course between the various pieces of progressive legislation—a style that would characterize much of his presidency.
