Past Institutes

The Progressive Era

On June 17–20, 2019, Humanities Texas partnered with the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin and the LBJ Presidential Library to hold a professional development institute for Texas teachers covering U.S. history during the Progressive Era.

Curriculum

The institute curriculum aligned with TEKS standards for the state's high school U.S. history curriculum. Topics addressed included the presidencies of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, foreign policy, muckrakers and reformers, the changing relationship of government and business, immigration, women's suffrage, the struggle for health in the early twentieth century, new forms of popular entertainment, African Americans in the Progressive Era, American art during the period, and America and World War I.

Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the institute emphasized close interaction with scholars, the examination of primary sources, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. 



Faculty

Bruce J. Schulman, William E. Huntington Professor of History at Boston University, delivered the institute’s keynote lecture. The program faculty also included Marcia Chatelain (Georgetown University), Jeffrey A. Engel (Southern Methodist University), Stacy Fuller, Kimberly Hamlin (Miami University), Joseph F. Kobylka (Southern Methodist University), Max Krochmal (Texas Christian University), David Oshinsky (New York University), Charles Flanagan (National Archives), and C. J. Alvarez, H. W. Brands, Janet M. Davis, and Jeremi Suri of The University of Texas at Austin.

Location and Schedule

The institute took place at the LBJ Presidential Library from June 17–20, 2019.
