The History of Texas German
Panel discussion
The History of Texas German Panel will gather a number of experts in the fields of historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and the dialectology of German to discuss the history of the German language in Texas and its status as a valued cultural treasure as well as an endangered variety. These scholars will lay out the history of the dialects—their places of origin in Europe, whether in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, or the Alsatian region of France, and the settlement patterns of German speakers in Texas—and will trace the growth of German in Texas, as well as its decline in recent years.
