Topics in Nineteenth-Century Texas History

On October 29, 2015, Humanities Texas will hold a workshop at the Witte Museum in San Antonio for Texas history teachers covering Texas history in the nineteenth century. Topics to be addressed include Texas under the Republic of Mexico, Mexican Americans in the Texas Revolution, slavery and the coming of the Civil War, Reconstruction, and nineteenth-century Texas art. Workshop faculty includes Alwyn Barr (Texas Tech University), Carolina Castillo Crimm (Sam Houston State University), Andrés Tijerina (Austin Community College), Andrew Torget (University of North Texas), and Stacy Fuller (Amon Carter Museum of American Art).

Teaching and Understanding Autobiography

On October 29, 2015, Humanities Texas will hold a one-day workshop in Austin to introduce strategies for teaching and understanding autobiography, memoir, and literary nonfiction at the secondary level. In their lectures and afternoon seminars, faculty will place special emphasis on teaching critical reading skills. Writers to be covered include Benjamin Franklin, Frederick Douglass, and a number of twentieth- and twenty-first-century practitioners of the genre. Workshop faculty includes Evan Carton, Carol MacKay, and Elizabeth McCracken, all of The University of Texas at Austin, and John Phillip Santos of The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Teachers at all workshops will receive books and other instructional materials and be trained in the examination and interpretation of primary sources. Content at all of our fall workshops will be aligned with the TEKS.
