Texas Before Statehood

On October 18, 2013, Humanities Texas held a workshop in Dallas for fifty Texas history teachers covering Texas history to 1845.

Curriculum

Topics addressed included Native Americans in Texas, Spanish Texas, Slavery in Texas, the Texas Revolution, and the Republic of Texas.

The workshop emphasized close interaction with scholars, the examination of primary sources, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Content was aligned with the TEKS, and teachers received books and other instructional materials.

Faculty

Worshop faculty included former state historian and Humanities Texas board member J. Francisco de la Teja (Texas State University); Juliana Barr (University of Florida); Raúl A. Ramos (University of Houston); and Andrew J. Torget and Randolph B. Campbell of the University of North Texas.
