From June 18–21, 2013, forty-eight teachers from around the state assembled on The University of Texas at San Antonio campus for "America at War in the Twentieth Century," an institute examining American military conflicts since 1900. Topics addressed included the Spanish American War, World War I, American isolationism and neutrality between the wars, World War II, Latinos in World War II, the origins of the Cold War, the Truman Doctrine, and the wars in Korea and Vietnam.

The institute keynote presentation was delivered by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy of Stanford University.

The institute faculty also included Senate Historian Emeritus Richard A. Baker; Arnold Krammer and Brian McAllister Linn of Texas A&M University; Mark Atwood Lawrence, Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, and Jeremi Suri of The University of Texas at Austin; Matthew Dallek of the University of California Washington Center; Jennifer D. Keene of Chapman University; Joy Rohde of Trinity University; and UTSA scholars Robert S. Browning and Patrick J. Kelly.

Educational specialists Richard Koone from the National Museum of the Pacific War and Stacy Fuller from the Amon Carter Museum of American Art guided teachers in using historic documents and works of art to teach U.S. history.
