Miguel Gonzalez-Gerth, professor emeritus of Spanish at The University of Texas at Austin, is rotating off our board following six years of dedicated service. To thank him, Humanities Texas presented him with a signed photograph of the Santa Elena Canyon by Bill Wright. Here are Gonzalez-Gerth's remarks to the board:
"This is the Santa Elena Canyon of the Rio Grande. In Mexico, we call it Rio Bravo. Mike and Humanities Texas didn't know that this would strike a very particular personal note with me, because not far from the Santa Elena, on the Mexican side there are lands that used to belong to my family. We sold part and donated part to the very large concern in Mexico called Cemex, which is Cement Mexico. [This] concern is developing the equivalent of the Big Bend National Park in Texas [on] the Mexican side. As a boy I used to roam those areas, so this is going to remain a very particular and sentimental memory for me both of Humanities Texas and of my Mexican youth. I thank you on both counts."
