In February, Humanities Texas will hold a series of one-day workshops for Texas language arts and social studies teachers.
On February 1, 2013, we will once again hold "American Writing on the Civil War." Designed for secondary-level language arts teachers, the workshop explores not only the multiple perspectives that Americans had, and continue to have, on the Civil War, but also the rhetorical strategies and devices that authors have used to communicate effectively. Featured authors will include Frederick Douglass, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Abraham Lincoln, Henry David Thoreau, Stephen Crane, and Robert Lowell. The workshop faculty includes Randall Fuller (University of Tulsa) and Evan Carton, Daina Berry, and Coleman Hutchinson, all of The University of Texas at Austin.
On February 8, 2013, Humanities Texas and the Texas State Historical Association will hold a workshop in Austin for Texas history teachers covering Texas history in the twentieth century. Faculty lectures will address Texas at the turn of the twentieth century, Progressive-Era reform movements, boom and bust in Texas industry, the Civil Rights Movement, and the emergence of two-party Texas. Workshop faculty includes Alwyn Barr (Texas Tech University), George Green (The University of Texas at Arlington), Monica Perales (University of Houston), Michael L. Gillette (Humanities Texas), Joseph Pratt (University of Houston), and Ambassador Chase Untermeyer.
Finally, between February 15–22, 2013, Humanities Texas will hold five one-day teacher workshops throughout the state focusing on slavery, secession, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Workshops will be held in Austin (February 15), Abilene (February 18), Corpus Christi (February 20), Dallas (February 21), and Kilgore (February 22). Faculty include Michael Les Benedict (The Ohio State University), Daina Berry (The University of Texas at Austin), H. W. Brands (The University of Texas at Austin), Albert S. Broussard (Texas A&M University), Daniel Feller (the University of Tennessee), George Forgie (The University of Texas at Austin), Donald Frazier (McMurry University), Carey Latimore (Trinity University), Eric Walther (University of Houston), and Jennifer Weber (the University of Kansas).
More information about each program is available at the education section of the Humanities Texas website. Teachers interested in attending should submit an application as soon as possible, as admissions are rolling and space is limited.
Please note that due to space limitations, you must be a registered participant to attend any of the workshops.
These workshops are made possible with major funding from the State of Texas, with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support has been provided by the Sid W. Richardson Foundation and the Summerlee Foundation.
