On September 10, Artpace San Antonio held the first of two ArtTalks examining connections between art and public space. Internationally recognized architect David Adjaye gave a presentation entitled "Making Public Buildings," which is also the title of both his new book and a traveling exhibition on display at Artpace this fall.
Mr. Adjaye was born in Tanzania and now lives and works in London. He has spent his career endeavoring to bring together examinations of history, geography, and community to shape the spaces in which he works. The companion exhibit to his talk will be on display in the Hudson (Show)Room through January 04, 2009.
The ArtTalks program supports scholarly lectures addressing the history and significance of public spaces. According to Artpace Executive Director Matthew Drutt, "As responsible citizens we must reflect on how we imagine, shape, and nurture gathering places and public space."
The second talk in this year's series will be given by Dr. Rochelle Steiner on October 30 at 6:30pm. As the Director of New York City's Public Art Fund, Dr. Steiner will offer not only historical perspective but also first-hand knowledge of curating and collaborating with internationally acclaimed artists. She will speak on the "ins and outs of successful public art."
