On February 16, 2012, social studies teachers from East Texas and beyond gathered at Region 5 Education Service Center in Beaumont to participate in a workshop with distinguished faculty. Albert S. Broussard (Texas A&M University), John Barr (Lone Star College-Kingwood), Jennifer L. Weber (University of Kansas), and Michael Les Benedict (The Ohio State University) gave lectures and shared primary sources related to slavery, secession, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
