State Representative Mike Villarreal is among dozens of volunteers who are working to ensure that every child in San Antonio is able to read at grade level. After studies indicated that 10 percent of San Antonio third-graders were reading below grade level, SAReads launched a campaign to ensure reading success for all area children. The program strives to make a reading buddy available to every second-grader in Bexar County. Villarreal, who is the mayor-appointed chairman of the community service initiative Serve SA, volunteers as a reading buddy for second graders at Herff Elementary School and says that more volunteers are needed as the program expands. For more information on the program, visit the SAReads website or listen to this Texas Public Radio story.
