Education
On April 25, 2024, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in San Marcos for English language arts (ELA) and social studies teachers on Texas in art, film, and music.
The workshop introduced participants to Texas artists and their work, offering insight into how Texas artists engage major themes of Texas history, culture, and identity. Presentations expanded participants' understanding of how the state is represented in art, film, and music.
The workshop featured close interaction with scholars, the examination of primary sources and texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Teachers received subscriptions to Texas Monthly magazine and other instructional materials.
The program faculty included Bavu Blakes (musician and educator), Jessica Fuentes (art educator) Alison Macor (author and film historian), and Jason Mellard (Texas State University).
The workshop took place at the Wittliff Collections in San Marcos. The workshop schedule is available here.
The workshop was made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
