Teaching U.S. History with Primary Documents, 1963–2000 (Spring 2022 Online Series)

In the spring of 2022, Humanities Texas held a series of webinars for history teachers on teaching primary documents that are crucial to understanding U.S. history in the final decades of the twentieth century.

Curriculum

The webinar series aligned with TEKS. Each webinar in the series covered a document that is crucial to understanding U.S. history in the final decades of the twentieth century: the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the Pentagon Papers, the House Articles of Impeachment for Nixon, a document relating to the 1977 National Women's Conference, and Reagan's "Evil Empire" speech. Each webinar focused on one of these documents, addressing both its context (how it came to be and its impact/significance) and its actual contents (the most important things for teachers to know and share with students).

Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the webinar series was content-based and teacher-centered, with an emphasis on teaching with primary sources and developing effective pedagogical strategies.

The program faculty included David Greenberg (Rutgers University), Mark A. Lawrence (LBJ Presidential Library), J. Todd Moye (University of North Texas), Jeremy Suri (The University of Texas at Austin), and Nancy Beck Young (University of Houston).
