Education
On October 16, 2024, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in Houston for social studies and English language arts on teaching media literacy.
Content aligned with the TEKS. The workshop expanded participants' understanding of journalism in U.S. history and provided resources and strategies to help students become informed citizens and critical consumers of news in multiple media.
Like all Humanities Texas programs, the workshop featured close interaction with scholars, the examination of primary sources and texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Teachers received books and other instructional materials.
The faculty included Gwynne Ash (Texas State University), Lisa Gray (Houston Chronicle), Kirsten Ostherr (Rice University), and Ford Risley (Penn State University).
The workshop took place at the Anderson-Clarke Center at Rice University. The workshop schedule is available here.
The workshop was made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
