Teaching Latino Poetry (Fall 2024 In-Person Workshops)

On October 2 and November 12, 2024, Humanities Texas held one-day workshops in Edinburg in Edinburg and San Antonio for secondary-level English language arts teachers focused on teaching Latino poetry and drawing on the recently released anthology from the Library of America.

Curriculum

The workshops explored the possibilities of Latino Poetry: The Library of America Anthology for classroom use by secondary-level English language arts (ELA) teachers. The anthology includes the work of close to two hundred poets and from the seventeenth to twenty-first centuries and presents those poems written in Spanish in the original and in English translation. Content was aligned with the secondary-level ELA TEKS.

The workshops featured close interaction with scholars and writers, the examination of texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Teachers received a copy of the anthology and other instructional materials.

The Edinburg workshop faculty included Stephanie Alvarez, Rodney Gomez, and Emmy Pérez of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Mónica Alvarez Suárez (PSJA Memorial Early College High School).
