Education
On October 1, 2024, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in Edinburg focused on nineteenth-century Texas history from the Republic of Texas through the end of Reconstruction.
Content aligned with the TEKS. Presentations covered the Republic of Texas, U.S.-Mexico War, and early statehood (1845–1859); secession and Civil War (1860–1865); early Reconstruction (1865–1870); and the end of Reconstruction and its aftermath (1871–1890s). Team-taught by a historian and master teacher, the workshop offered new assessments of the era and provided a collection of curriculum materials geared toward bringing innovative perspectives into the classroom.
Like all Humanities Texas programs, the workshop featured close interaction with scholars, the examination of primary sources and texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Teachers received books and other instructional materials.
Andrew Torget (University of North Texas) and Courtney Abubakar (Texas History for Teachers) served as workshop faculty.
The workshop took place at the Region One Education Service Center. The workshop schedule is available here.
The workshop was made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
