George Washington and the Making of America: The Revolutionary War and First Presidency (Fall 2024 Webinar Series)

On October 2 and 9, 2024, Humanities Texas held two webinars for social studies teachers on George Washington.

Curriculum

Content aligned with the TEKS for U.S. history and government. Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the webinar series was content-based and teacher-centered, with an emphasis on teaching with primary sources and developing effective pedagogical strategies.

  • October 2: Republican General: George Washington and the American Revolutionary War—It is often said, correctly, that George Washington lost more battles than he won in the American Revolutionary War. This session will explore why Washington's republican principles mattered even more than his battlefield victories for securing America's independence and representative government.
  • October 9: George Washington: Inventor of the Presidency—George Washington was not simply the first president but the person who most shaped the office. This session will trace Washington's efforts from the Philadelphia Convention through his two presidential administrations to create the presidency as we know it today.

Faculty

Denver Brunsman (George Washington University) led the webinar series.

Schedule

The series took place over Zoom from 5:00–6:15 pm on October 2 and 9. The webinar schedule can be viewed here.

Sponsors

The webinars were made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
