Education
On October 21, 2024, Humanities Texas held a webinar facilitated by educators from the Smithsonian American Art Museum introducing teachers to a variety of resources and strategies for using documentary photography to develop visual literacy, historical thinking, and analysis skills.
Content was aligned the TEKS. Led by museum education professionals, this interactive session demonstrated how photography can help students develop visual literacy, historical thinking, and analysis skills in the humanities classroom. Teachers explored historical photographs of local communities, made connections and comparisons to our present, and came away with practical teaching strategies and ideas for lesson extensions.
Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the webinar emphasized the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities.
Phoebe Hillemann and Abbie Hitzemann of the Smithsonian American Art Museum led the webinar.
The webinar took place over Zoom from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on October 21, 2024. The webinar schedule can be viewed here.
The webinars were made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
