The American Civil War: History, Literature, and Culture (Spring 2023 In-Person Workshop)


On February 3, 2023, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in Houston on teaching the history, literature, and culture of the American Civil War.

Curriculum

The workshop expanded participants' understanding of the history of the American Civil War and its representation in poetry, prose, music, and visual cultures/film.

The workshop featured close interaction with scholars, the examination of primary sources and texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Teachers received books and other instructional materials.

Faculty

Workshop faculty included Kathleen Diffley (University of Iowa), Randall Fuller (University of Kansas), Coleman Hutchison (The University of Texas at Austin), and Caleb McDaniel (Rice University).
