This stereograph documents a train trip that President Theodore Roosevelt took from Louisiana to Washington, D.C., stopping in “nearly every town along the route,” including Dallas, Fort Worth, Amarillo, Colorado Springs, and Denver. It shows a crowd in Denison, Texas, waiting to greet the President, whose train is seen in the background. Stereographs are two images made simultaneously with a dual-lens camera, which are then mounted on a card. In the stereoscope viewer, the two images combine to create a single, three-dimensional image that approximates human binocular vision and, in this case, would have helped viewers feel as if they were part of the crowd.
