Humanities Texas Award

The Humanities Texas Award recognizes imaginative leadership in the humanities on a local, regional, or state level.

Nominees might include a local library that has started an especially effective reading and lecture series; a group whose work has advanced heritage tourism efforts; or an individual who has developed a significant public program grounded in history, literature, philosophy, archaeology, folklore, or other humanities disciplines.

The winning individual or organization receives a cash award of $5,000. Nominated individuals must reside in Texas, and organizations must be based in the state.

The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2007 award was July 4, 2007. Humanities Texas will solicit applications for the 2008 Humanities Texas Awards in the spring.

Prior to 2003, Humanities Texas recognized outstanding Texas humanists with the James F. Veninga Excellence in the Humanities Award. Past recipients of the Veninga award included:

  • 2002/2003 Texas philanthropist, Mr. Harold Courson, of Courson Oil and Gas in Perryton.
  • 2001 The Education Outreach Program (EPO) of the Houston World Affairs Council.
  • 2000 Ms. Carol H. Nicklaus, Professor of Interdisciplinary Humanities and Philosophy and Coordinator of the Honors Program at Amarillo College.
