These resources should be pedagogically sound and grounded in strong scholarship; they may be in print or digital form. Projects that address a recognized curricular need at the primary or secondary level are especially encouraged.

Awards will range from $5,000 to $10,000. Partial awards are possible.

Award decisions
Projects will be evaluated on the quality of their conception and design, the strength of their pedagogical and scholarly components, and the extent to which they meet the needs of teachers and students of Texas history across the state. Proposals for institutes and workshops will not be considered. Priority consideration will be given to projects that have raised third-party, nonfederal funding.
Previous winners
In 2006, Humanities Texas awarded the first Howell grant to Texas Parks and Wildlife for the development of A New Deal for Texas Parks, a set of online educational resources exploring how individuals, communities, and landscapes in Texas were shaped by the New Deal Era.
In 2008, Humanities Texas awarded the second Howell grant to the Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University for the development of educational resources associated with Texas Music History Online (TMHO). These resources, which will explore different facets of the state's music history, will be aimed at Texas middle and high school students but also available to anyone who visits the TMHO site. The resources will include video documentaries, lesson plans, primary sources, and suggested additional readings.
Linden Heck Howell
This opportunity is made possible by the Linden Heck Howell Memorial Fund. The Fund was established in memory of Ms. Howell, former member and chair of our board of directors, as a lasting tribute to her service to the organization and her commitment to the study of Texas history. Ms. Howell served on the board from 1996 to 1999, during which time she made significant contributions to the vitality of not only the Texas council, but also the national Federation of State Humanities Councils. Her commitment to the humanities inspired family, friends, and colleagues alike.
Humanities Texas inaugurated the Linden Heck Howell Memorial Fund with financial contributions given in her memory from many people whose lives she had touched and leadership gifts from Howell’s parents, William A. and Thalia Atkinson Heck of Midland; brothers, James Heck of Austin and Douglas Heck of Midland; and husband, J. William Howell of Portland. This fund has also made possible the Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award, presented annually by Humanities Texas, which carries a prize of $5,000, with an additional $500 to the winning teacher’s school. Additional funding for this initiative is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities We the People initiative.
