Students working

Humanities Texas supports the work of Texas teachers through a range of educational initiatives.

Teacher awards

Each year, Humanities Texas recognizes the achievements of thirteen exemplary educators who teach courses in language arts, social studies, and other humanities subjects at the primary and secondary levels. Each winner receives a $5,000 cash award and an additional $500 for his or her school to use in purchasing humanities-based instructional materials.

Teacher institutes

Each summer, Humanities Texas partners with the state’s leading universities and cultural organizations to hold residential summer institutes supporting teachers ’ intellectual and professional development. These institutes offer teachers the opportunity to work closely with leading humanities scholars, exploring topics at the heart of social studies and language arts curricula.

A President's Vision

In 2010, Humanities Texas will distribute a poster series titled "A President's Vision" to Texas schools. The series features six posters, each examining a single U.S. president’s aspirations and illustrating the programs and initiatives that advanced his vision. A corresponding online resource center will contain a rich set of teaching materials to supplement the use of the “President’s Vision” poster series.

Exhibitions program

Humanities Texas provides high-quality, affordable traveling exhibitions to schools throughout Texas and the nation. Exhibitions cover a wide range of TEKS-compliant subjects and can be scheduled to coincide with events on the academic calendar such as Constitution Day and Black History Month. The exhibitions program also offers a large collection of print materials, documentaries, and other media resources to supplement curriculum development and has developed Humanities Interactive, an online educational exhibitions space that can be accessed from home or the classroom.

Linden Heck Howell Texas History Initiative

This initiative supports outstanding Texas history instruction and the development of Texas history curricula.

Grants program

Working in partnership with NEH, Humanities Texas provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and institutions for humanities programs aimed at public audiences. Schools often use these grants to rent Humanities Texas exhibits and to hold cultural and educational programs for their communities.
